ll castello di Porrona è una struttura fortificata situata nel borgo medievale di Porrona, nel territorio comunale di Cinigiano. La sua ubicazione è nella piazza del centro storico, all’angolo occidentale del perimetro delle mura di Porrona.
Il castello fu costruito in epoca medievale dai Senesi, proprio nel periodo in cui venivano realizzate le mura che delimitano il borgo. I lavori furono ultimati all’inizio del Duecento.
Divenuto subito luogo di soggiorno per famiglie nobili senesi, dal Trecento in poi divenne la residenza dei Tolomei e dei Piccolomini, che si spartirono il controllo sul castello e sul vicino palazzo situato nella parte centrale del borgo.
In epoca tardorinascimentale e, più precisamente, all’inizio del Cinquecento, la struttura venne completamente ricostruita; un successivo restauro effettuato nei primi anni del Novecento in stile neogotico ha riproposto i perduti elementi stilistici di epoca medievale.
Il castello di Porrona si affaccia sulla stessa piazza in cui è situata la pieve di San Donato. Le pareti del lato esterno coincidono con l’angolo occidentale della cinta muraria.
La struttura è costituita da due principali corpi di fabbrica. Il fabbricato principale si sviluppa su più livelli, con la facciata che guarda verso la piazza della chiesa spezzata ad una certa altezza dalla torre che, sporgendo leggermente, poggia su tre mensole; le monofore che si aprono sulla parete della torre culminano con archi a sesto acuto. La torre si eleva oltre il tetto a quattro spioventi ed è coronata alla sommità da una caratteristica merlatura cordonata. Sul lato destro del fabbricato principale si addossa un altro corpo di fabbrica, di altezza minore, che culmina con una merlatura sommitale cordonata che interessa tutta la struttura.
Le pareti dell’intero complesso si presentano interamente rivestite in pietra, riprendendo pienamente gli elementi stilistici medievali che caratterizzano tutti gli altri edifici del suggestivo borgo castellano.
The castle of Porrona is a fortified structure located in the medieval village of Porrona, in the municipal territory of Cinigiano. Its location is in the square of the historical center, at the western corner of the perimeter of the walls of Porrona.
The castle was built in the Middle Ages by the Sienese, just in the period when the walls that delimit the village were built. The works were completed at the beginning of the thirteenth century.
Immediately become a place of residence for noble families of Siena, from the fourteenth century onwards it became the residence of the Ptolemies and Piccolomini, who divided up control over the castle and the nearby palace located in the central part of the village.
In late-Renaissance and, more precisely, at the beginning of the sixteenth century, the structure was completely rebuilt; a subsequent restoration carried out in the early twentieth century in the neo-gothic style re-proposed the lost stylistic elements of medieval times.
The castle of Porrona overlooks the same square where the parish church of San Donato is located. The walls of the outer side coincide with the western corner of the walls.
The structure consists of two main buildings. The main building is on several levels, with the façade looking towards the church square broken at a certain height from the tower which, protruding slightly, rests on three shelves; the single lancet windows that open onto the tower wall culminate with pointed arches. The tower rises above the four-pitched roof and is crowned at the top by a characteristic cordoned battlement. On the right side of the main building there is another smaller building, which culminates with a cordoned top battlement that covers the entire structure.
The walls of the entire complex are completely covered in stone, fully recovering the medieval stylistic elements that characterize all the other buildings of the charming castle village.
