Campagnatico è situato a circa 20,4 km dal mare ed è facilmente raggiungibile con la tratta Siena-Grosseto. Situato su una collina e ombreggiato da una scogliera a 160 metri sul livello del mare, tra stretti vicoli e vecchie facciate, qui si trova questo piccolo borgo medievale perfettamente conservato con una splendida vista sulla valle del fiume Ombrone. Nelle belle giornate la vista panoramica sulle colline toscane si estende fino al mare, e si può anche godere di tramonti mozzafiato. Il villaggio è stato scelto per anni come luogo di buon ritiro dall’attore di Harry Potter, Alan Rickman.
Il nome di Campagnatico, secondo teorie prive di conferma, deriverebbe da “campus” e “agnaticus”. La tradizione si riferisce a un soldato romano che, essendo stato assegnato ai territori di Campagnatico, per evitare la frammentazione, li avrebbe resi “agnatici”, cioè ereditati solo dai
primogeniti. Un’altra ipotesi vuole che il nome sia derivato da “campana”, simbolo che appare nell’emblema della città.
La corte di Campagnatico appartenne al monastero di S. Salvatore sul monte Amiata e fu acquistata o donata alla famiglia Aldobrandeschi che già controllava altri territori della Maremma.
Il villaggio fu infatti menzionato per la prima volta in un documento del 973 tra le proprietà di famiglia con le quali è anche menzionato nelle terzine della Divina Commedia di Dante. Omero di Aldobrandeschi fu soffocato nel suo letto per mano di assassini ingaggiati dalla Repubblica Senese, che vedevano nei signori locali un limite ai suoi obiettivi espansionistici nella Maremma. Si dice che gli assassini fossero camuffati da monaci, essendo questo l’unico modo per avvicinarsi a Omberto. Nel XIII secolo, sotto la famiglia Aldobrandeschi, Campagnatico era già un centro di commercio e produzione del legno, ma fu nel XV secolo che vennero costruiti gli edifici, attorno ai quali si sviluppa l’attuale centro storico. Insieme a Siena, divenne parte, nella prima metà del XVI secolo, del Granducato di Toscana, di cui seguì poi il destino. Sotto il governo dei Medici, Campagnatico fu abbandonato per vivere nello squallore. Il comune fu fondato sotto Pietro Leopoldo di Lorena che costruì il cassero, un vetraio, un orologiaio e si unì alla corte di Campagnatico con Montorsaio, Civitella, Casale e Pari.
Lo sviluppo del villaggio a partire dal XIII secolo determinò la nascita di luoghi di culto sia all’interno che all’esterno del villaggio.
All’interno del Borgo accessibile attraverso una porta medioevale si trovano inoltre:
- la torre ed i ruderi del castello degli Aldobrandeschi, da cui si dice che parta un tunnel sotterraneo che lo colleghi direttamente a Siena;
- la meridiana – un antico orologio che segna l’ora solare attraverso la proiezione di luci e ombre su un quadrante posizionata in Piazza Dante;
- la fontana pubblica – una fontana in ghisa a pianta quadrata. Su di essa c’è lo stemma di Campagnatico e ci sono le quattro bandiere rappresentanti le quattro contrade – Castello, Centro, Pieve, Santa Maria, che annualmente a settembre ancora oggi si sfidano durante il Palio dei Ciuchi;
- casa di Alan Rickman – in via Umberto si trova anche la casa di Alan Rickman, il professore Severus Piton (Severus Snake in inglese) insegnante di pozioni nella saga di Harry Potter. L’attore, morto nel 2016, aveva scelto Campagnatico come ritiro per le vacanze estive e come luogo di riposo anche durante le pause di lavorazione della saga. L’attore lo trovava il posto perfetto per passare inosservato senza l’ansia di essere riconosciuto;
- Villa Bellaria – attualmente è un agriturismo circondato da un ampio e suggestivo parco che fu progettato nel 1932 dal più grande architetto paesaggista italiano del tempo: Pietro Porcinai. Il parco ha una terrazza con vista sulla valle del fiume Ombrone, di notte è illuminata da antichi lampioni.

Campagnatico is situated about at 20,4 km from the sea and it is easily reachable with the route Siena-Grosseto. Located on a hill and overshadowed by a cliff at 160 metres over sea level, between narrow alleys and old facades, here you find this perfectly preserved small medieval village with a beautiful view over the valley of the river Ombrone. On beautiful days the panoramic view of the Tuscan hills extends to the sea, and you can also enjoy breathtaking sunsets. The village has been chosen for years as a place of good retreat by the Harry Potter’s actor Alan Rickman.
The name of Campagnatico, according to theories void of confirmation, would derive from “campus” and “agnaticus”. The tradition refers to a roman soldier who, having been assigned the territories of Campagnatico, to avoid fragmentation, would have made them “agnatic”, that is inherited only by the first born. Another hypothesis wants the name to be derived from “bell”, symbol that appears in the emblem of the town.
The court of Campagnatico belonged to the monastery of S. Salvatore on the mount Amiata and it was bought by or donated to the Aldobrandeschi family who already controlled other territories in Maremma.
The village was in fact mentioned for the first time in a document of 973 among the family properties with which it is also mentioned in the tercets of the Divine Comedy by Dante. Omberto of Aldobrandeschi was suffocated in his bed at the hands of assassins hired by the Senese Republic, that saw in the local lords a limit to his expansionist aims in the Maremma. It is said that the assassins were disguised as monks, this being the only way to approach Omberto. In the thirteenth century, under the Aldobrandeschi family, Campagnatico was already a centre of commerce and wood production, but it was in the fifteenth century that the buildings, around which the current historical centre is developed, were built. Together with Siena, it became part, in the first half of the sixteenth century, of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, of which then followed the fate. Under the Medici government, Campagnatico was abandoned to live in squalor. The municipality was established under Pietro Leopoldo of Lorena who built the quarterdeck, a glassmaker, a watchmaker and joined the court of Campagnatico with Montorsaio, Civitella, Casale and Pari.
The development of the village starting from the thirteenth century, determined the birth of places of worship both inside and outside of the village.
Inside the village accessible through the medieval door, you can find:
- The tower and the ruins of the Aldobrandeschi castle beneath which it is believed to be located an underground tunnel that connects it directly to Siena.
- The sundial – an ancient clock that marks the solar time through the projection of lights and shadows on a dial in the Dante square.
- The public fountain – a square-shaped cast-iron fountain. On it you can find the crest of Campagnatico and also four flags that represent the four districts: Castle, Centre, Pieve, Saint Mary. These districts keep competing annually during the donkey contest in September.
- Alan Rickman’s house – On Umberto Road you can find Alan Rickman’s house, the Professor Severus Snake, teacher of potion in the Harry Potter franchise. The actor, who died in 2016, chose Campagnatico as a retreat for the summer holidays and as a place of rest when not working on the movie set. The actor found Campagnatico a perfect place to pass unnoticed without the stress of being recognized.
- Villa Bellaria – Currently it’s an holiday farm surrounded by a large and evocative park that was designed in 1932 by the biggest Italian landscape architect of the time: Pietro Porcinai. The park has a terrace overlooking over the valley of the river Ombrone, and at night it is illuminated by old street lamps.
