The complex was built in the thirteenth century by the Sienese, becoming an important defensive structure and sighting. Entered into the Republic of Siena, in the mid-fifteenth century it was put on sale and sold to the Lords of Cotton. During the Renaissance period, redevelopment works were carried out . They determined the overlapping of stylistic elements of the period with the pre-existing elements dating back to the Middle Ages. Once part of the territory administered by the Grand Duchy of Tuscany until the mid-sixteenth century, the complex remained in private ownership. At the end of the last century, restoration work was completed and it brought the castle back to its former glory.
The castle of Vicarello, currently, is used as an agritourism residence.
